I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. I love
having the opportunity to reflect each year on the many things I have to be
thankful for, and, as always, my career as a newborn photographer makes the list! I’m so lucky to have a job I
enjoy, and one that allows me to use my passion for photography every day. And
since we’re talking about things we’re grateful for, it seems only appropriate
to mention that I’m so glad I got to have Nicco in my studio last month!
This handsome young man was brought in by his parents, Lindsay
and Vincent, along with big brother Dominic for a newborn photography session. Nicco was eleven days overdue, so he
was a big guy. Babies grow so much in such a short amount of time; it’s
amazing. Anyway, because he was such a little chunky monkey we had fun trying
to get him to fit in some of my newborn outfits! Luckily, he was a good sport
about it. And, of course, he’s not the only baby I’ve worked with who isn’t as
tiny as other newborns, so I’ve learned that hats (much more flexible than
clothes) and blankets are a good way to work some fabric and texture into the
photos without having to put baby into a complete outfit.
Nicco’s dad, Vincent, is a power lineman, so we incorporated
some of his work gear as props, although as I look through the photos I don’t
think any of those made it into this blog post. And Dominic is going to make a
great big brother. I think they’ll have a lot of fun together!
We used gray as our main color in this newborn photography session. It sounds a little boring, but mixed
with woody browns, a little cream, and the occasional splash of color—like Nicco’s
red pants in the picture below, (so cute!), or like the blue jeans his dad and
brother are wearing in the collage—it turned out understated and masculine
without being dull. The liberal use of gray also allows for an almost seamless
incorporation of black and white photography. You can see in the collage that
we only have one black and white photo—the one of Nicco with his mom—but because
of the subtle color scheme it blends in naturally with the other pictures, so
you almost don’t notice that it’s different.
It was so much fun for me to have Nicco and his family in my
photography studio in Eugene, Oregon.
They are a wonderful family, and take great pictures together. I have a feeling
that Nicco’s birthday, coming just a few weeks before Halloween, will herald
the start of the holiday season for this family in future years. I’m so happy
that they’ve been able to welcome this new little guy into their circle, and I
feel sure that every day is going to be an adventure with two energetic boys
around the house! It sounds like so much fun!
