I did this maternity
photography session last month with Betty Lou, her husband Shawn, and their
daughter Josie. Betty is a firefighter and Shawn is a policeman, and they are expecting
twins—a boy and a girl—in January. I can’t wait to meet them! I have several
sessions scheduled with the new babies when they arrive: Fresh 48, newborn, and
then milestone sessions every three months through their first year. It’s going
to be wonderful to have them in the studio so often and to watch them grow through
that exciting and eventful first year of life.
We met on a beautiful fall evening at Dorris Ranch. I feel
so lucky as a Eugene, Oregon
photographer to have such a beautiful outdoor photography location readily available
to me. Dorris Ranch is a scenic spot that has served me well on many occasions,
whether I’m doing maternity, family, or mini sessions, and I’m glad the weather
was nice enough for me to be able to use it again for Betty’s maternity
session. Although it was November and so a little chilly—especially for Betty, I’m
sure, in her lacy maternity gowns—it wasn’t cold enough to keep us away, and we
got some beautiful pictures. We got really lucky with the sunshine as well, and
I love the greens and golds it highlighted for us in the fall leaves.
Little Josie did great for the photos. She seems very
excited about her new brother and sister, and is going to be a big help to her
mom and dad, I’m sure. She is such a cutie pie. She has a wonderful smile,
gorgeous blue eyes—and I loved her blonde pigtails! She did really well
following my instructions, but part of why working with kids is so fun is their
spontaneity, and we definitely had some of those moments as well! Baby and child photography is as much about
play as about posing, and Josie and I both had fun as she displayed the energy and
imagination of a child and I tried to work those natural moments into the
shoot.
The maternity gowns Betty picked for her maternity photography session were both
beautiful, and I loved how the more casual outfit she wore still fit right in
with the more elegant look of the gowns. The lacy white top was a great choice
and made the pictures work together very nicely, particularly in the collage.
I’m really glad the weather worked out for us to be able to
do this outdoor maternity photography
session. It was a pleasure to meet this family and I’m looking forward to
getting to know them better as I work with them and their newest members over
this next year. Twin photography, especially with infants, presents special
challenges, but it also makes for some great photos and fun new twists, and I’m
always up for that! I’m so excited for the amazing changes this family is gearing
up for, and I’m sure the new year will be a wonderful and memorable one for all
of them!
