Di and Xinlu brought their adorable son Vincent to my photography studio in Eugene, Oregon
early last month to capture the milestone of one hundred days! Such a neat idea.
Apparently in some Asian cultures a hundred days is a special milestone in a
baby’s life, and many families carry on this tradition today. The roots of this
celebration are somewhat sobering: before modern healthcare practices, a lot of
infants died shortly after birth, so the hundredth day is historically a time
to celebrate the survival of a child through that first, most difficult period of
his or her life. Thankfully, in this day and age, it is the rule rather than
the exception that a baby will reach this milestone, but I think it’s wonderful
to carry on such a joyful tradition of celebrating life and health!
Vincent was so chunky and cute! He’s got such a round face
and soft, fluffy hair that likes to stick up on top of his head! He was also a
very strong little guy for his age, and did great at holding his head up and
smiling for the camera. Three months is typically a bit tricky for a baby photographer, since little ones
still like to sleep a lot at this stage, so their waking periods are fairly
short. They’re also not old enough to sit independently so I generally have to
get creative with props I can use to literally “prop” them up with! Smiles at this age also tend to be pretty few and
far between, and a lot of times baby’s expression is the same in most of the
photographs. Vincent was an exception though! He had a great time in the studio
and was super interactive with me and with his parents.
I love the cute shots we got of him with his mom and dad. What
a sweet family! Little Vincent is obviously so well loved and seems to
thoroughly enjoy kisses and cuddles—which is a good thing, because with that
adorable face I have a feeling he’s going to be kissed and cuddled a lot!
We went with a simple, understated combination for our colors—gray
and teal with a splash of black and cream—and decided on an airborne theme for
our props: My wooden airplane and hot air balloon are some of the props I use
the most as a Eugene, Oregon
photographer, and I got some use out of them again during Vincent’s milestone
session. He looks ready for adventure, doesn’t he?
I’m so glad Di and Xinlu asked me to do this baby photography session for their
little guy. He really was such a happy, engaging baby that it was extra fun for
me to spend some time with him. I enjoyed meeting both him and his parents, and
loved learning a bit more about another culture as I helped this family
celebrate an important milestone in Vincent’s life. I wish them all the luck
and happiness in the world!
