Elyse
brought in little Julia for her one-year cake smash photography session.
I was the Eugene, Oregon photographer for this sweetheart when she was a
newborn, and have also done her big sister’s pictures, so although only part of
the family was able to make it this time, it was wonderful to have Julia and
her mom back for some milestone shots. This was a mini session, so we just did
the one setup and spent about twenty minutes together in the studio. We got
some great photos of this cutie!
Julia’s birthday
party was done in a narwhal theme, so we went with that same look for her cake
smash. Since narwhals are sea creatures we used lots of teal and purple for an
underwater feel (also a popular color scheme for mermaid themes), plus some
gold to add sparkle! Although we didn’t plan it this way, I realized later that
purple was the theme color of Julia’s newborn pictures, and yes, we had teal in
there as well. So that was kind of a fun throwback.
Shelley at
Sweet Peaks Cakery did an awesome job (as always) with the cake. She decorated
it to look like a baby narwhal, complete with ocean waves around the base. Julia
didn’t eat a lot of her cake during this birthday photography session,
but she did do a great job of making a mess and destroying it. As you can see
from the photos, it was pretty much unrecognizable by the time she got through
with it.
Although you’d
never know it from the pictures, Julia actually got off to a bit of a slow
start with her cake. She was reluctant to use her hands for playing with it, so
I gave her a spoon to see if she’d be happier with an implement for digging
into the frosting. (I’ve learned to keep all sorts of fun stuff in my Eugene,
Oregon photography studio. You never know what will catch a kiddo’s fancy.)
Problem solved! This little birthday girl was happy to get started on the demolition
job once she had the proper tool. She practically bathed in the frosting! (I think
she might have also fallen in love with the spoon because she kept snuggling
it. It was adorable!)
Julia gave
me so many good smiles throughout this baby photography session. Both she
and her big sister have always been such awesome photography subjects for me.
Always smiling and laughing! I enjoyed every minute of my time with Julia—and I
think it’s pretty obvious that she had a great time too!
