I got to do this maternity
photography session early last month with Jennifer, who is expecting a baby
girl very soon. We had beautiful weather and a great location, and all of our
shots turned out so well. I’m excited to show them to you!
Jennifer wanted a rustic location for her session, and loved
the idea of Dorris Ranch with its orchards, meadows, weathered wooden fences, and
natural colored barn. We took advantage of the many scenic backdrops and included
a little bit of each in our photos. As a Eugene,
Oregon photographer I have a few go-to locations for outdoor sessions, and
Dorris Ranch is one I’ve used many times before. It’s great for maternity and family
shoots: such a pretty spot, with enough variety in the scenery to lend plenty
of interest. There’s something for everyone there, and I love living (and
working) so close to such a wonderful place.
Everything was so fresh and green on the evening we chose
for our shoot. Oregon in the springtime is truly beautiful! We’re lucky that in
April and May we tend to have mild temperatures and a mix of rain and sunshine
that the plants just love—and the result is lush foliage and sweet, soft
wildflowers galore. It also keeps residents very busy mowing their lawns since
everything grows so fast, but it’s well worth it! There were some pretty, pale
purple flowers in bloom at the ranch on the day we were there, and we made sure
to include them in some of our pictures. It’s always nice when Mother Nature
chips in with some of her magic!
Jennifer was also excited to use some of my new maternity
gowns. I’ve been slowly building up my collection over the past couple of years,
but I recently purchased about fifteen new gowns, so have a total of around
twenty-five options for my clients to choose from. With maternity photography becoming so popular, there are lots of
beautiful colors and styles available now, and I find it kind of hard to resist
them!
We ended up using three different gowns in this session: a
lovely cranberry one with a flowing train that looks amazing when it’s picked
up by the breeze; a simple, wide-necked turquoise gown; and an off-shoulder
white with lots of elegant lace. Jennifer looked great in all of them, and I
love the effect of mixing the different colors. It gave our session a bright,
almost playful effect, while still keeping that graceful feel that I usually
shoot for as a maternity photographer.
It was wonderful to do this outdoor maternity photography session with Jennifer. She is a
lovely lady and it was a pleasure to be her photographer as she gets ready for
the arrival of her little one. Speaking of which—I can’t wait to see that little
girl in the studio for her newborn pictures very soon! If she looks anything
like her mama she is going to be one pretty baby!
