Jennifer brought her adorable new daughter, Alikiaja, in to
my photography studio in Eugene, Oregon
last month for a newborn photography
session. What a beauty! Alikiaja had the prettiest dark hair, lovely skin, and
such a sweet little face.
Alikiaja was a tiny little thing. Her mom told me she was
just a little over five and a half pounds when she was born, and although she’d
put on a bit more weight by the time of our session, she was still so petite! She
was also a great sleeper for me, and although she woke up at one point she didn’t
seem too bothered and went back to sleep again pretty quickly. She just had
time to stare at me curiously, but she obviously decided I wasn’t worth
worrying about, since she gave me an enormous (and flat-out adorable) yawn
before rolling over and falling asleep again. I made sure to catch that on
camera! Seriously. Baby yawns? It doesn’t get much cuter than that.
A full newborn
photography session like this includes parent and sibling images if parents
want them, but Jennifer decided to skip the family photos as she really wanted
the focus of the session to be on the newest member of the family. I’m always
happy to work with what whatever folks are wanting, so we made Alikiaja the
unrivaled star of the show, and she did great with it.
Jennifer chose purples and creams as the main colors of this
session and I just love the way that color combination turned out! Purple isn’t
usually my first choice, but the dark plum and lavender contrasted with the
cream really worked well, and looked great with Alikiaja’s skin and hair too.
It’s still totally feminine and appropriate for a baby girl, but with a different
flavor than the more traditional pink and white that I’m used to seeing as a newborn photographer. Actually, I
thought it ended up having a very soothing feel, like the scent of a lavender
vanilla candle, but with colors. Maybe that’s my own unique weirdness though!
If you’re wondering about the name Alikiaja, I have no idea.
You’d have to ask her mom! It’s one I’d never heard before, (and my work as a Eugene, Oregon photographer exposes me
to a lot of different names) and it has a very exotic flair. I was talking to
someone the other day who said they used to go by their last name in school,
because their first name was very popular and there was always at least one
other person in their class with the same name, but I don’t think that’s a
problem Alikiaja will ever need to worry about!
It was a pleasure to be the newborn photographer for this sweet baby girl. She really was a gem—so
pretty and easy to work with—and I love the way her pictures turned out. I hope
I’ll see her and her family in the studio again as she gets older!
