I met with Tanya and Don and their beautiful new daughter
Arabella last month for a newborn
photography session. What a lot of fun we had! Arabella was such a
sweetheart for me, so well-behaved and a great little sleeper (which, by the
way, gave me plenty of opportunities to admire her amazingly long eyelashes! Am
I jealous? Yeah, maybe just a little.)
Arabella is such a pretty baby! She has her mom’s olive skin
tone which is just gorgeous, especially with the dark hair she inherited from
both her parents. She also has the sweetest, most expressive little mouth and
such a cute nose! Usually babies noses don’t have a lot of shape to them and
become more defined when they get older, but it’s pretty clear that Arabella
got Tanya’s nose, and that she’s going to look so much like her mama! She’s a
lucky girl, because her mom is beautiful!
Speaking of mom, Tanya brought in lots of fun items to tie
into our newborn photography session,
including lots of cute hats and headbands. We decided to go with a very traditional
pink and white color scheme, and I think it was a good choice. No doubt about
it: Arabella sure does look pretty in pink! There wasn’t a lot of need for me
to use many of the props I have in the studio, although we did get some really
great shots of Arabella sleeping in my old-fashioned pram. Mom and Dad brought
plenty of their own props from home, including some medical books and a stethoscope
since they are both doctors. It was fun to incorporate their chosen careers
into their daughter’s pictures, and as a Eugene,
Oregon photographer I always love when people bring their own unique touch
to a session. I don’t know if Arabella will follow her mom and dad into the
medical field, but she did seem to feel quite comfortable using their reference
books as a pillow. Maybe she was soaking up some of the information via
osmosis!
We used plenty of texture in this session, both in the
backgrounds and in Arabella’s outfits. I always like the interest that textural
contrast offers to photographs, so I enjoy pairing thick, puffy crochets with
silky lengths of fabric, or rough wood with bright, delicate florals. Same
thing with colors: although I often pair light with light, especially for newborn photography, it’s fun to throw
some high contrast images in here and there, putting baby in a white, bright,
or pale outfit against a dark background, for instance.
I loved having little Arabella and her parents in my photography studio in Eugene, Oregon.
They are such a great-looking family, super nice, and very easy to work with.
Arabella was a real angel. If she’s half as good at for her parents at home as
she was for me at the studio, her mom and dad are one lucky couple! It was a
pleasure to meet this family and I wish them every happiness!
