Ashley and Eric brought their beautiful daughter, Merida
into my photography studio in Eugene,
Oregon the day after Fourth of July for her newborn photography session. Isn’t she a cutie? She was so good for
me and I had a great time meeting her and getting to know her family.
We did mostly purples, blues, and grays for Merida’s
session. Since those colors naturally tend to remind me of twilight and the
soothing night sky (particularly welcome during the summer as it also heralds a
break from the heat of the day) I thought it would be a good chance to use my
moon and stars props against a starry background. Merida seemed super comfy in
her little moon bed, which I padded with plenty of soft, cushy fabrics.
Although we didn’t work it into this session, Ashley and
Eric told me that they’ve done Merida’s nursery in a dinosaur theme. I thought
that was a great idea and I love how non-traditional it is for a baby girl! As
a Eugene, Oregon photographer, I get
all kinds of fun and unusual ideas for nursery themes, but I think dinosaurs
for a girl was a first for me. Seriously though, why not? Dinosaurs are just as
fascinating to little girls as little boys (I know they were for me, anyway),
and who knows, maybe Merida will grow up to be a paleontologist someday,
remembering that awesome bedroom from her childhood!
Since this was a newborn
photography session, our focus was obviously on Merida, but we also got
some great pictures of the whole family. It’s up to the parents as to whether
they want to include family pictures, but I think it always ends up being a
nice touch. Ashley and Eric are so excited about their sweet daughter, and they
all look so good together!
Merida was such an easy baby to work with. She was one of
the best little sleepers I’ve seen, and was totally conked out the whole time.
It was so cute, and of course the added bonus was that it made it a snap for us
to get lots of pictures and try out plenty of different outfits and headbands. I’m
having trouble deciding which is my favorite, she looks so adorable in all of
them, but it just might be the picture below. She does look darned good in
blue!
We didn’t do a whole lot in the way of props, preferring to
just change up the backgrounds and outfits a bit, so that kept things really
simple and streamlined, but we still got some nice variety in our pictures. Honestly
though, who needs variety to keep things interesting when you’ve got a face as
cute as Merida’s?
I love being a newborn
photographer, and it was great to have this wonderful family in my studio. Ashley
and Eric are so blessed with their new little one, and I couldn’t be happier
for them. I am sure they have many happy days ahead!
